A spring Sunday on the allotment plot. Construction of a framework for espalier fruit trees. My design involved driving 8 foot posts two feet into the ground to create a 6 foot high structure. I drew four parallel wires horizontally the full length of the espalier, inclining the end posts outwards and hanging weights from them, after the fashion of a loaded crane jib, to counteract the tension in the wires. The resulting lightweight but (I hope) strong structure reminds me of the finely balanced forces in bicycle design.
