I had a mid-week day out from Lancaster, using the fabulous coastal train line through Silverdale, Arnside, Grange-over-Sands, Ulverston, Barrow, round the Duddon Estuary, to Millom and the foot of Black Combe at Silecroft. From this halt, I took an off-path route, following a subsidiary ridge to the summit, and enjoyed views of the spring snow on the Lake District mountains. On the return leg the gleaming Irish Sea dominated the scene.
